The Main Activity of the Krishna Consciousness Movement

The Importance of Chanting the Hare Krishna Mantra

The main activity of the Krishna Consciousness Movement is the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra. This is done in order to purify the minds of the mass of people and to bring them to Krishna consciousness.

Material existence is caused by impurities in the mind. If someone can purify their mind, they will immediately regain their original position as a conscious being in Krishna consciousness. This is why all the great saints in the disciplic succession recommend the practice of chanting and hearing the Hare Krishna mantra.

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the Public Chanting of the Hare Krishna Mantra

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu introduced the public and congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra so that everyone could have the opportunity to hear the holy name of Krishna. Simply by hearing this mantra - Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare - one becomes purified (ceto-darpana-marjanam).

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness

Following the example of Lord Chaitanya, the Krishna Consciousness Movement is spreading the maha-mantra and encouraging people all over the world to chant it. We are giving people a vast treasure of spiritual literature, translated into all the major languages of the world, and by the grace of Sri Chaitanya, these books are selling in large quantities and people are taking great pleasure in chanting the maha-mantra.

This is the method of preaching specific to the worship of Lord Chaitanya. Since He wanted this worship to be spread all over the world, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness is humbly trying to see that the vision of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is realized throughout the world, especially in the Western countries.
